Clarification Coming

Seventeen Rotarians and two guests (Tracy Lewis, Barre Partnership and Lia Rubel, our guest speaker) met via Zoom hosted by President Eddie. Before the rituals, Joe Shadroui reported that Dick was upbeat, sitting in the sun and singing. We said the pledge and Joe Preddy provided us with thoughtful words in giving thanks. President Eddie asked for a volunteer to sing America the Beautiful, solo, at the next meeting (Tom Babic’s name was mentioned as a possibility). He reported that we have 400 masks to distribute and asked for ideas to make that happen. Several ideas were discussed and rejected before settling on previous ways of distributing the masks: Front Porch Forum and our own connections. Distribution at a previously scheduled event to be held at Wilson Industrial Park was also suggested. Caroline reported that members of Gen Rotary have volunteered to take over trash cleaning in Barre City on Thursday nights. Interact will be asked to join them. Anyone wishing to participate should meet on Thursday, May 28th at the Recreation Center. There seems to be some confusion about the Annual Rotary Breakfast. Two plans are being developed for an Aldrich Library fundraiser: breakfast tickets printed with raffle numbers and the Barre 500 race car idea. There was a question of whether the breakfast had been cancelled. President Eddie will work with those involved in an effort to clarify the situation.

Telehealth Access for Seniors

President Eddie introduced our guest speaker, Lia Rubel, a former Rotary Speech Contest winner. She is a sophomore at Emory University majoring in finance. She is a member of an a cappella group and a non-profit club.

Lia Rubel became involved in a project initiated by a friend, Telehealth Access for Seniors. Its aim is to provide camera enabled devices, such as smartphones and iPads, to seniors in order to be able to access telehealth medical services. There are over 25 million older citizens living in poverty who have a high risk of death and disability. Many do not have access to the internet or devices with a camera necessary for conducting telehealth sessions. To date, the organization has 48 partner clinics in 28 states. Devices with guidelines for setup and operation are sent to patients in need. Remote technical support is also available. Lia enumerated donation strategies: use social media, ask friends, family and corporations for donations. Lia is the coordinator for Vermont and told us that the VA Hospital in White River needs 100 devices. Devices need to be reset and sanitized before a donation is made. To make a donation go to: www.telehealthforseniors.org and fill out a donation form. In lieu of a device donation you can make a monetary contribution to the organization by going to: www.gofundme.com.  Additionally, one can help by sharing the website address with family, friends and coworkers or by volunteering. Lia sees a bright future for this endeavor: reduced patient and hospital costs; decrease in hospitalizations; better quality healthcare; and greater access for those who live in rural areas. For further information contact Lia Rubel: liarubel@gmail.com or (802) 505-8213.
